Coaches Corner 2: Overcoming Other's Anger

A master coach understands that from time to time she will run into challenges with a coaching situation. When someone comes into the coaching space with anger try the following: Plan Ahead  - Think ahead. Write down the coaching plan along with any obstacles ahead of time to help you mentally and emotionally prepare.  Focus on Feelings, Empathy and Needs  - This may sound "soft" but you have to remember that each person you coach is just that -  a person. Hear and identify the feelings and needs that they are sharing with you. Feelings: "Jane, if I'm hearing you correctly it sounds like you are feeling de-valued by this feedback, is that correct? What else are you feeling?" Empathy: "Thank you for sharing your feelings with me. I appreciate your open communication and can certainly empathize with you." Needs: "It sounds like you have a need to feel like your work is making an impact and that you are being recognized for the effort you...

Coaches Corner 1: Say Less, Ask More

Becoming a master coach in business mean's setting the ego aside. Master coaches don't tell others what to do. Instead, the master coach focus on asking questions that lead others to see what is in front of them. Below are three simple tips to implement into your coaching practice: Pause the Ego : When tempted to "fix" a problem hit the ego pause and try the following. Observe : Point out an observation:  "Jim, I'm seeing that we are trending 10% behind MTD in our YOY revenue."  "Jane, I see that we have not improved our customer satisfaction metrics over the past two months." Ask : Ask a question to start the process others to think: "Jim, how do you see this?" "Jane, what thoughts do you have regarding our engagement metric performance?"
