Coaches Corner 3: Building Trust
- Be Genuine. Never compliment another person or try to "build them up" just for the sake of fluffing them to receive your feedback. Be genuine in all your communication.
- Be Open. One of the most impactful ways to build trust is to introduce the elephant in the room immediately. Don't shy away from the tough topic. Introduce it first and tackle the most important topic first.
- Ask: "So, what's the most important topic we need to discuss today?"
- Say: "I know that the most difficult challenge can take the most time. Could we tackle this issue first to respect the time we have together?"
- Live By The Anatomical Ratio. You have two eyes, two ears and one mouth. They should be used in that proportion.
- See what is being communicated through the body language of the other person. Observe 2X as often as you speak. Don't assume you know what is going on by the body launguae however...many mis-read body cues...observe and ask for clarity as you move forward.
- Hear what is being said. What words is the other person saying? How is their tone? Listen 2X as much as you speak.
- Speak as little as needed but as powerfully as you can. If you have one chance to speak after your 2X seeing and 2X listening be sure you edit out unnecessary details. Brevity is power.
Remember that trust is built over time through genuine, open communication. By observing, listening and only speaking when contributory you will be well on your way to building trust as a master coach.
